Coexistence of Equatorial Coupled Modes of ENSO*

To study the regimes of leading ocean–atmosphere coupled modes of relevance to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, a comprehensive eigenmode analysis of an intermediate coupled model linearized with respect to an array of basic states is performed. Different kinds of leading modes are found to coexist and become unstable under wide ranges of basic states and parameter conditions...

Indirect stabilization of weakly coupled systems

We investigate stability properties of indirectly damped systems of evolution equations in Hilbert spaces, under new compatibility assumptions. We prove polynomial decay for the energy of solutions and optimize our results by interpolation techniques, obtaining a full range of power-like decay rates. In particular, we give explicit estimates with respect to the initial data. We discuss several ...

Observations of Coupled Spheroidal and Toroidal Modes

In low-frequency seismic spectra the Coriolis force theoretically causes quasi-degenerate coupling of spheroidal and toroidal modes whose spherical harmonic degrees differ by unity and whose frequencies are close. It has been found that the coupling causes clearly observable effects on seismic spectra below 3.0 mHz. Many fundamental toroidal modes have a spheroidal component and vice versa. For...

Modes of coupled photonic crystal waveguides.

We consider the modes of coupled photonic crystal waveguides. We find that the fundamental modes of these structures can be either even or odd, in contrast with the behavior in coupled conventional waveguides, in which the fundamental mode is always even. We explain this finding using an asymptotic model that is valid for long wavelengths.

On the Stabilization of Internally Coupled Map Lattice Systems

The adaptive adjustment mechanism is applied to the stabilization of an internally coupled map lattice system defined by xi,t+1 = G((1 − αi − βi)xi,t + αixi+1,t + βixi−1,t), where f : R → R is a nonlinear map, and α and β are nonnegative coupling constants that satisfy the constraint αi +βi < 1, for all x ∈ R, i= 1,2, . . . ,n. Sufficient conditions and ranges of adjustment parameters that guar...
